中嶌真平は、ジャズギタリストとしての長年の演奏活動と、野鳥や自然をテーマにした執筆活動を並行して行っている。表現の手段は異なるが、いずれにおいても対象を丁寧に観察し、関係性や構造として捉える姿勢を一貫している。
幼少よりクラシックピアノを学び、18歳でプロとして活動を開始。20代で単身ニューヨークへ渡り、ジャズギターの巨匠Pat Martinoに師事した。ニューヨークを拠点に活動し、Cotton Clubをはじめとする数多くのステージに出演。即興音楽の現場で経験を積みながら、演奏と空間の関係性についての理解を深めていった。
帰国後は自身の音楽プロジェクト「Freestyle Collection」を立ち上げ、同名アルバムを英国レーベルより世界リリース。ジャズを基調にヒップホップやファンクを内包した作品として発表され、近年アメリカの老舗ジャズ番組にて再評価されている。続くセカンドアルバム『Chloe』では、オーバーダブを用いた制作手法により、演奏の即時性よりも空間や構成を重視した表現へと展開し、その後の活動の方向性を示す転換点となった。
近年は、野鳥や自然をテーマとした執筆活動にも取り組んでいる。『ココロさえずる野鳥ノート』（文一総合出版）、『身近な「鳥」の素顔名鑑』（SBクリエイティブ）では、鳥を知識として整理するのではなく、行動や環境との関係性に着目した視点を提示している。文献調査やフィールドでの観察を踏まえた記述の背景には、鳥類の行動を新たな観点から捉える学術的な考察も含まれている。
現在は、音楽と空間の関係性を探るライブプロジェクトや、映像と音を組み合わせた継続的な表現に取り組んでいる。一回性の成果を目的とするのではなく、時間をかけて成熟していく表現のあり方を模索しながら、音楽家として、作家としての活動を続けている。

About (English)
Shinpei Nakashima is a jazz guitarist and writer whose work spans music performance and nature writing. Across both fields, his practice is grounded in careful observation and an interest in how relationships, environments, and structures shape expression.
Nakashima began studying classical piano in early childhood and started working professionally as a musician at the age of eighteen. In his twenties, he moved to New York, where he studied with legendary jazz guitarist Pat Martino and performed extensively, including appearances at venues such as the Cotton Club. During this period, he developed a strong foundation in improvisational music and an interest in the relationship between sound and space.
After returning to Japan, he launched his music project Free Style Collection and released an album of the same name through a UK-based label for international distribution. Rooted in jazz while incorporating elements of hip-hop and funk, the album was later reintroduced by a long-running American jazz radio program as a notable contemporary work. His second leader album, Chloe, marked a shift toward a more spatial and structural approach to music-making and became a turning point in his artistic direction.
In recent years, Nakashima has also been active as a writer focusing on birds and the natural environment. His books, including Kokoro Saezuru Yacho Note (Bun-ichi Sogo Shuppan) and Mijika na Tori no Sugao Meikan (SB Creative), emphasize observation and ecological context rather than simple identification. His writing is informed by extensive literature research, field observation, and academic perspectives on animal behavior.
Currently, Nakashima is engaged in projects that explore the relationship between sound, space, and time through live performance and ongoing audiovisual works. Moving fluidly between music and writing, he continues to develop forms of expression that evolve gradually and value continuity over immediacy.
